Introduction to Polyhedrons
Constructing the Sacred Solids
Material Analysis
Paper straws, threader, yarn, constructive triangles (equilateral), templates for the 5 Platonic solids.
Presentation: Decoding the Name
Hold up a tetrahedron skeleton made of straws.
"The word 'Polyhedron' comes from Greek. 'Poly' means many, and 'hedron' means side or face. This solid has four faces. In Greek, 'tetra' means four, so we call this a tetrahedron."
FIG 1.1: TETRAHEDRON (4 FACES)
The Platonic Law
Present templates for the other four regular polyhedrons.
"When all the faces are identical regular polygons and meet at the same angle, it is a Regular Polyhedron. There are only five of these in the whole universe. Would you like to do some research to find the other four?"
"Cutting straws accurately to form the 'skeleton' requires significant executive function. Don't underestimate the power of this manual work for brain development!"
