Guide's Script

"We always start with the largest category. Who wants to move the stone to the Thousands?"

Guide's Field Notes

Long Division with Stamps

Quotative ("Grouping") Division

The Setup

  • Stamp Game: Full set.
  • The Stone: A small, non-hierarchical object (pebble, button) to track place value. Crucial for focus!
  • Paper: Grid paper to write the problem before starting.

Watch Out!

Zeroes: The skittles are place holders. If you have a zero in the divisor, use a place marker (like the colored disks) to hold the spot, even if no stamps go there initially.

Pedagogy: "Calibration"

"Use 1-digit divisors first. Not to bore them, but to 'calibrate' their understanding. Can they exchange? Do they know where to write the answer? Once confirmed, move quickly to multi-digit division."
